Tuesday, June 13, 2006
El Paso, TX—St. Joe started their first southern swing with a tough 14-3 loss at El Paso. It was tied at three into the seventh when the ‘Snakes (12-18) faltered and the Diablos (12-19) took control with six runs in the seventh and five more in the eighth. The loss ended St. Joe’s winning streak at a season-best six games.
The two teams traded runs in each of the first two innings before El Paso took their first lead with a run in the fifth, 3-2. The ‘Snakes tied it up at three in the sixth on Wil Quintana’s solo home run. It was Quintana’s sixth home run of the year, and first since May 20.
Then the Diablos offense took over, amassing season highs allowed by St. Joe pitching in runs and hits. They sent 11 men to the plate in taking the lead in the seventh, and 10 more batters hit in the five-run eighth.
Evan Thomas (2-4) took the loss, allowing the first two runs in the seventh inning. Mark Burke had a pair of hits to lead the offensive attack.
The ‘Snakes will look to even the series Wednesday night with Mark Nussbeck (2-1) starting opposite El Paso’s David McWatters (0-2). First pitch is scheduled for 8:05 Central Time from El Paso, and the broadcast begins at www.stjoeblacksnakes.com at 7:45pm.
